The internet of things! How heating systems are moving into the digital age! CALI I-SENSE

The Internet of things (stylised IoT) is the internetworking of physical devices, also referred to as “connected devices” and “smart devices”, buildings, and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and network connectivity to enable these objects to collect and exchange data to augment user interaction with the “smart device”.

The IoT allows objects to be sensed and/or controlled remotely across existing network infrastructure, creating opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems, and resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy and economic benefit in addition to reduced, yet more effective, human intervention. When IoT is augmented with sensors and actuators, the technology becomes a cyber-physical system such as smart homes, intelligent transportation and all the way up to entire smart cities!

Experts estimate that the IoT will consist of almost 50 billion objects by 2020, and whilst this can all seem far off, this revolution of connectivity is becoming more and more prevalent within the devices in our homes and offices!

IntelliHeat UK,  have been studying the IoT concept for a number of years now to understand how best to integrate this connectivity revolution into the most energy-thirsty devices in our homes and offices, the electric heating systems!

Working in collaboration with Italian partners, Intelliheat is now launching the WIFI integrated electric radiator range with built-in smart sensors to detect both the temperature of the room and more importantly, movement in the room! This will be the first truly “smart” radiator on the UK market, the integrated WIFI system will enable the units to link to the users web-based control portal, whilst the built-in sensors will enable the radiators to compare the user’s program for each of the rooms with the actual physical usage of the said room.

This smart electric radiator will then prompt the user to revise heating settings after studying the lifestyle patterns over the initial month, this analysis will continue throughout the lifecycle of the product to ensure settings are always delivering the most efficient usage patterns! It is this enhanced level of a user and device interaction which is at the heart of the IoT concept, and which delivers the capacity for users to enjoy a more efficient and intuitive heating experience through the IntelliHeat system!

It is this concept, directly inspired by the IoT process, of a truly smart radiator which IntelliHeat are now able to offer clients. This is much more than a remote control system and energy monitor, the radiator will now work with the user to optimize settings, rather than the user just telling the radiator what to do! This means understanding the user’s lifestyle to heat the areas which are in use when they actually need heating to ensure that users enjoy exactly the right temperature where and when they need it without any waste!
