Read through our FAQ's page to find an answer for your question on Electric Radiators.

Which is cheaper gas or electric heat?

Electric radiators have developed significantly over recent years. They are extremely reliable units which offer a range of benefits to any occupant looking to heat their property. Heating the whole home with a gas boiler is a very inefficient and costly process. It is similar to leaving all of the hot taps on in the house just to wash your hands in the kitchen.

With IntelliHeat intelligent zoning, economy and efficiency are greatly increased. With electric heating, the entire property is divided into unlimited zones covering all different living needs you may have. Heating available on demand where and when you need. One degree in excess is an extra £75 a year!

With a traditional 20-25kW gas boiler you will heat the entire property. IntelliHeat 6-8 kW will create energy-efficient heating zones easily and cost-effectively, by programming the desired time/temperature settings directly to individual radiators or zones.

Gas vs. Electric Heating Costs

20-25(kW) Gas Boiler x 8 pence per hour = £1.85

6-8(kW) IntelliHeat x 13 pence per hour = £0.95

How much does electric central heating installation cost?

IntelliHeat electric radiators have been designed for the client or installer to be quick and easy to fix on the wall. With features such as pre-wired electrical connections, certified wires and wall mounting brackets, ensures a fast, secure and simple installation.

A typical five electric radiators installation in a two bedroom house will cost around £2500. As opposed to a gas system, IntelliHeat’s electric heating systems can be installed in just one day.

Once the heating plans have been sent to you the contractor can organise supply and installation. Our experienced electrical contractor will arrive on time to install your new electric radiators.

Each electric radiator can be secured on any kind of wall with the two wall brackets provided. Then the radiator is connected into a fuse spur socket and switched on to test.

Our engineers will explain exactly how the programmer and the radiators, zoning controls will work before he leaves.

Which electric radiators should I choose?

With many types of radiators to choose from, including our EcoDesign Electric Radiators, Vertical Radiators, Designer Towel Rails and WiFi Smart Radiators.IntelliHeat’s radiators are available in a choice of designs and sizes, which makes them the perfect replacement for storage heaters and are quick and easy to install, with no pipes or pumps.

Everything to keep you warm, our entire product range has been designed to obtain a quick and accurate response when the temperature needs changing, in order to guarantee the highest level of comfort in any given moment and to reduce energy consumption.

IntelliHeat’s electric radiators can be controlled and programmed independently, therefore providing each separate room with the exact amount of heating, only when and where it’s needed.

Each one of our heating units is made of high-grade aluminium and filled with our patented thermodynamic fluid, to maximise conductivity. It is then tested in controlled environments to deliver optimal heat transference.

How does electric heating work?

All our electric radiators provide responsive and efficient heating using three key components which work together to ensure extremely high levels of energy efficiency, which makes them truly unique.

Each electric radiator is fitted with a high-quality element that absorbs energy and heats up quickly, this retains the energy but releases it slowly. Once heated, it uses minimal power to maintain the correct temperature required to heat the thermodynamic fluid.

Each electric radiator is filled with a thermodynamic fluid and our exclusive Advanced Condensing System which is specifically formulated to heat up rapidly and expand to the entire heat exchange area, resulting in a maximum outer surface hot point effect.

Are electric radiators safe?

Most radiators on the market in the UK have a basic CE, the Cali Sense is fully compliant with the latest UK Lot 20 EcoDesign directive and accredited with an NF Electricité Performance certification.

This is indisputably one of the most stringent quality control certifications in the world and is clear evidence of the superior quality and energy efficiency of our products compared to all other competitor systems available on the UK market.

The NF certification mark of compliance covers all aspects such as safety, quality, usability and energy performance. Certification rules are defined with consumers and businesses, tests, manufacturing plant inspections, customer satisfaction surveys, mystery shoppers, and so on.

Even after obtaining NF certification, the product and its manufacturing site’s are continuously audited to ensure a consistent level of quality is maintained throughout the production process, offering consumers the guarantee of a rigorously tested quality control procedure.

This means that the Cali Sense has been tested by Veritas and LCIE, independent bodies in safety, performance and energy efficiency. Unlike our competitors that just talk, we prove our performance by independent lab testing.

How much do electric radiators cost to run?

Since our inception, our aim has always been to maximise energy efficiency to both reduce fuel costs and deliver a more environmentally friendly heating solution.

Every heater is designed to deliver efficiency, control and comfort through a unique combination of interdependent highly accurate temperature control, energy consumption regulating and heat distribution features.

The secret behind IntelliHeat’s unique offer is an innovative two-phase heat transfer process that not only delivers a much more rapid rise in temperature but also facilitates heat recovery of energy already produced, substantially lowering running costs.

With up to 30% saving in comparison to oil, LPG or storage heaters, which makes IntelliHeat’s products an affordable alternative.

What size electric radiator do I need?

In terms of heat load calculations, the insulation values, sap rating would provide a recommended heat load of watts per m3. As that can affect this decision include orientation of the room, energy sap, the number of windows and the delta of the room.

To get an initial idea of the requirements, we would start with a 35 watts per m3 (for the Cali Sense) and either increase or decrease this requirement depending on the additional insulation and orientation factors. This would only increase to a maximum of 45 watts per m3 for a shack static home with no insulation and single glazing or reduce to a minimum of 30 watts per m3 for a perfectly insulated brand new double glazed apartment.

How do smart electric radiators work?

Each electric radiator works independently and can be programmed to match precise heat requirements throughout the day when used in conjunction with IntelliHeat’s App (which uses WiFi wireless technology).

Customers wishing to take energy control a step further can take advantage of our smart home package, delivering total control with individually programmed hourly and daily settings for your IntelliHeat electric central heating system, alongside your other electrical appliances.

Whether you’re home or away, just take control of your home or premises by adjusting the temperature, time and monitoring cost exactly how you’d like them.

Are electric radiators expensive to run?

Not necessarily, compared to inefficient storage heaters our radiators have shown to be up to 30% cheaper to run due to the efficient eco-design and award-winning controllability.

Our radiators work on any normal electric tariff, not restricted economy 7. They are specifically designed to replace the bulky, inefficient and poor control of outdated storage heating.

Our advanced electric radiators provide comfortable, flexible and fully controllable heating throughout your home or business exactly where and when you need it. There is no plumbing required, and they are quick and inexpensive to install.

Running cost 1 x 1000w radiator *3 hours of electricity (gives 8 hours of heat @ 20 degrees) x 1 kW system = 3 kWh per day x 10 pence/unit = £0.30/day x 30 days = £9/month (Heating 1 room at 20 degrees for 8 hours)

*Based on Economy 10 tariff

In addition, our systems are totally flexible, easy and inexpensive to install and are fully controllable. Our unique technology allows you to divide your home into heating zones and control each of the heating requirements for each room or zone individually.

Are the radiators stocked in the UK or are they imported cheap goods from places such as China?

The regulations for Chinese radiators are much less stringent than the UK and EU standards. Most of the foreign radiators are only rated as Class 1 for electrical safety and are sent over to order from China, so a long waiting time for every delivery – including spare parts.

Intelli Heat radiators are stocked in Thetford UK and are delivered by Intelli Heat vans to anywhere in the UK, within days and have a Class 2 certification for electrical safety – double insulated for consumer safety.

Here are the details of both these classifications:

Class 1 Equipment

Basic insulation which relies on an earth for protection and will receive an earth continuity and an insulation test. Examples of class 1 equipment are kettles, toasters, irons, microwaves, electric heaters, fridges, freezers, washing machines and tumble dryers etc.

Class 2 Equipment

Has supplementary insulation and therefore does not rely on an earth for protection and is easily identified by the double square symbol and will receive an insulation test. Examples of Class 2 equipment are televisions, DVD players, lamps, power tools, hair dryers etc.

Do the electric radiators arrive with any instructions in English or is the contractor left to work it out when installing it in your home?

It is stated in the EN Standard that all electrical equipment MUST be supplied with a comprehensive instruction book, showing installation requirements and instructions.

Every Intelli Heat radiator is supplied with a full instruction manual and every contractor buying them for the first time is fully trained by Intelli Heat in every aspect of the products, including how to operate the built-in 7 day programmers on every radiator.

What happens if there is a problem? If a radiator gets scratched, dented, bent or if someone drops a spanner onto the programmer and smashes the display?

The foreign suppliers have absolutely no provision for any of this, assuming they’re still in business; you will need to remove the radiator, send it to the contractor to get it sent back to China, to then be further assessed before any replacement part can then be returned to you, taking many months and leaving the consumer freezing cold in the process.

In contrast, IntelliHeat will send a replacement radiator out from their UK warehouse the following day, no fuss, no quibble; as they have a 10-year guarantee on every product. In fact, for an average Housing Association order of 200 radiators, Intelli Heat sends out 209, just in case any have a scratch, or any damage occurs during the installation process.

Buying electric central heating for the first time should be a quick and easy process, but please do make sure that you find the answers to these questions BEFORE you try to save a few pennies on a cheaper imported product.

What is the NF performance testing?

It includes a few endurance tests that demonstrate the quality of the product over time like an ageing test of resistance is performed.

What is Eco Design Lot 20?

Lot 20 is the key part of the new Eco-design legislation which came into effect since the 1st of January 2018 and continues to regulate all electric space heaters and electric radiators to comply with a set of minimum efficiency guidelines and to comply with Energy-Related Products Regulations (ERP), and use enhancing eco saving features.

How does Lot 20 work?

The New Cali Sense is fully compliant with the new Eco Design legislation. Through the Cali Eco Sense range, Intelli Heat is pioneering the integration of intelligent electric heating controls on direct-acting electric heating systems.

What is adaptive temperature control and Eco start? What is Real-Time Energy Use Readout?

Some radiators on the market use the colour change display as a special end unique feature. This is simply a graphic temperature indication. It’s not unique to their particular model, in the Cali Sense it is listed as a “Behavioural indicator”.

Real-Time Energy Use Readout

The Cali Sense LCD control screen shows you how many Watts are being used in real-time!

Can the thermostat on the radiator show me the current energy consumption?

With the visual power use display, you can see exactly how much power is being consumed.

Does the thermostat on the radiator allow programming, holidays and child lock?

What is Self-Programming and how does it work:

The Cali Sense is equipped with the V27 technology and without any prior adjustment, the radiator is in a learning mode to understand and memorize the behaviour of the occupant: periods of absence, presence.

The initial learning phase is 7 days minimum but this learning is perpetual, it repeats week after week to understand and optimise.

What are intelligent electric heating controls?

Intelligent controls managing the running times of your electric heater will incorporate three key features:

  • 24 hour or Timer Control. This could be an integrated programmer, or with the latest Cali I-Sense, a Wi-Fi connected smartphone app controller.
  • Thermostatic Control. Accurate room temperature measurement by an electronic digital thermostat.
  • Smart Start Control. V27, Open door or window recognition, presence detection technology reduces wasted energy when a thermostat detects a drop in temperature, the presence sensors enable the heater to automate its heating cycles.

Are Intelli Heat radiators built in China?

No, The Cali Sense is designed in Italy with French high tech electronic components. Some companies just mention “design in the UK” but nothing about production location… is it made in Europe or in China? Where are their factories located?

Why are Smart Wifi Electric radiators so useful?

The new ‘app’ means that if you can’t get home for any reason, or want to stay over and go home tomorrow, you can simply turn off your heating, or turn it down to a lower temperature while you are away.

If you are on holiday and the weather freezes back home, you can just turn on the heating in whichever rooms you choose, for as long as you choose, to protect your home from freezing.

If the train is delayed and you are running late home, just turn on the lights in the hall, lounge and kitchen, so it looks to possible intruders that someone is home.

Need to get changed and rush out again? Just give the hot water a quick blast while you drive home, so it is all ready and waiting for you.

Sitting comfy in the middle of a film and don’t want to miss any? Then just use the app to turn on the hallway light, or dim the lounge lights without even moving from your chair.

Perfect for anyone who is living with reduced mobility and finds it difficult or time-consuming to get to the light switch, or turn the heating up.

What is it called?

We have given it a name that is hard to forget: we call it the WHAP which stands for Wireless Heating Automation App – WHAP!

It really is time to consider upgrading these antiquated systems and Intelli Heat’s ranges of energy efficient electric central heating systems are a perfect choice – especially when there is no mains gas to the property.
